kayaking
The Victoria area is the perfect place to start a kayaking excursion. Just a short distance from the inner harbour of Victoria is the Chain Islands. The Chain Islands are a small archipelago that has been set aside as a marine park. The rocks are covered with nesting sea birds, and during July kayakers can watch the young chicks as they learn to fly. Harbour seals call the Chain islands home. The large kelp forests surrounding the park are perfect fishing grounds for the seals. During low tide the Harbour Seals will haul out on the rocks and get some rest. Since there is so much life in the Chain Islands Transient Orcas use this area as a favorite hunting ground looking for unwary seals.
Just a little east of the Chain Islands is the Chatham and Discovery Islands. This larger archipelago offers well protected water with minimal current. The Discovery light house is loaded with history of the early days of Victoria. The Chatham Islands have small shallow channels where kayakers can observe star fish and small schools of bait fish. Resting in the tree tops are Bald Eagles waiting for their next meal to foolishly come close to the surface. All this is just a short boat ride from Victoria.
